Memorial, Houston neighborhoods: where Memorial is and living there

Green parkland and twin arched tunnels with the Houston skyline beyond

Memorial Houston neighborhoods share a well-known name, but the Memorial area in Houston covers different cities, school districts and tax lines. This guide explains where Memorial is, what changes from one address to the next, and where to find a nature stop off the main roads.

Where is Memorial in Houston?

Memorial is in west Houston, along and around Memorial Drive and the I-10 (Katy Freeway) corridor. Two distinctions matter. Memorial Park is a separate destination from the residential areas farther west. The Memorial Villages are separately incorporated cities with their own governments and tax rates; Bunker Hill Village, for example, is listed as its own taxing unit by the Harris County Tax Office. The HCAD record shows whether an address is inside one of the villages or the City of Houston.

Living in the Memorial area: address first

When you compare homes in the Memorial area, start with the address rather than the area name. Map the property alongside your regular destinations, test the route at the times you’d normally travel, and notice access to the public spaces you expect to use. Describe neighborhoods here by streets and landmarks, such as Memorial Drive, Woodway Drive and the I-10 corridor, and let HCAD confirm the city and taxing units.

Home prices in Memorial

Redfin reports a median sale price of $749,790 for its Memorial neighborhood in Houston (all home types, three months ending September 2026), up 5.6% from a year earlier. That figure covers Redfin’s Memorial neighborhood only, not every address that uses the Memorial name. For context on budgets, see how the latest jobs numbers affect housing budgets.

Taxes

Rates are per $100 of taxable value, for tax year 2026:

  • Harris County: 0.41750; Flood Control District: 0.05266; Harris Health: 0.19528
  • Spring Branch ISD: 1.05630, or Houston ISD: 0.8421, depending on the address
  • City of Houston: 0.519190, adopted Oct 14, 2026 (Ordinance 2026-0884), for addresses inside Houston city limits. Village addresses pay that village’s rate instead.

Your total depends on your address and your exemptions. Look up any property on HCAD.

School district information

Public school assignment in the Memorial area is set by the school district and depends on the exact street address. Memorial-area addresses are served by Spring Branch ISD or Houston ISD, depending on the address. Some addresses may be served by a different district. Boundaries can change, so verify by address with the district before relying on any assignment.

Choosin’ Texas Living does not rate, rank or compare schools. Information last checked: October 16, 2026.

Commute routes

The main routes are I-10 (Katy Freeway), Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Tollway), I-610, Memorial Drive and Woodway Drive. The City of Houston average commute is 27.2 minutes (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020–2024, mean travel time to work). That’s a citywide average and doesn’t describe Memorial Villages addresses. Check live conditions on Houston TranStar.

Find a nature stop off the main roads

The Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary offers a woodland setting in west Houston, and its historic log cabin connects the site to the land’s earlier history. Read the sanctuary’s visitor information, including its access and group-visit guidance, before you go.

If your outing includes Memorial Park, plan it as its own stop. The Clay Family Eastern Glades and Hines Lake are two places to start; our Eastern Glades walk has a simple route. For a meal afterward, CITYCENTRE’s directory helps you plan a separate stop.
